Description
A group of Czech immigrants began to meet in parishioners’ homes around Megargel to celebrate Holy Mass with Father Philibert Haase. The town of Megargel was established in 1910, named after Roy C. Megargel, the president of the railroad that developed the town. The Czech community built the present church in 1916. On May 1, 1917, the church was dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. There were reportedly 350 people living in Megargel in 1914 and 1,200 people in 1927 after oil was discovered 4 miles away. The 1930 US Census recorded 813 people in 1930. There is not much sign of oil today and the population in the 2010 census was 203.
